In their ongoing efforts to create better experiences for their mobile users, Google recently announced to the world it was going to start treating mobile-friendly websites differently than non-mobile-friendly websites.

(Find out how your website is being seen by Google later in this blog post.)

Mobile search results are now different

Does having a mobile-friendly website improve your Google rankings?

This is up for (heated) debate at the moment. However, even if the answer is currently "no", it appears that there's a strong possibility of mobile-friendly websites being ranked better on the horizon.

In fact, here are the words straight from Google's mouth in late November 2014: "We are also experimenting with using the mobile-friendly criteria as a ranking signal."

What's required for Google to consider your website mobile-friendly?

According to Google, the following four factors play large roles in whether or not they consider your website to be mobile-friendly:

  1. Avoidance of software that's not commonly found on mobile devices (e.g., Flash)
  2. Use of text that's readable without requiring a user to zoom in
  3. Re-sizing of content to fit users' screens, so they don't have to scroll horizontally or zoom
  4. Placement of links far enough apart so the correct one can be easily tapped
