Oh Wow, Google Just Got REAL About Mobile-Friendly Websites
In their ongoing efforts to create better experiences for their mobile users, Google recently announced to the world it was going to start treating mobile-friendly websites differently than non-mobile-friendly websites.

Mobile search results are now different
Mobile-friendly websites are now (finally!) getting labeled appropriately in Google's search results. This example image shows Google's new mobile-friendly label.
Does having a mobile-friendly website improve your Google rankings?
This is up for (heated) debate at the moment. However, even if the answer is currently "no", it appears that there's a strong possibility of mobile-friendly websites being ranked better on the horizon.
In fact, here are the words straight from Google's mouth in late November 2014: "We are also experimenting with using the mobile-friendly criteria as a ranking signal."
What's required for Google to consider your website mobile-friendly?
According to Google, the following four factors play large roles in whether or not they consider your website to be mobile-friendly:
- Avoidance of software that's not commonly found on mobile devices (e.g., Flash)
- Use of text that's readable without requiring a user to zoom in
- Re-sizing of content to fit users' screens, so they don't have to scroll horizontally or zoom
- Placement of links far enough apart so the correct one can be easily tapped
